Talbot County, Maryland
The Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay’s blue crabs,
oysters, and endless waterways figure prominently in our American iconography, but figuring out where to touch down in this idyllic area can be intimidating. Talbot County is a perfect introduction, with its 600 miles of shoreline and charming small towns, including Easton, Saint Michaels, and Oxford. Each is filled with antiques shops, gardens, historical homes, and restaurants high and low, which is why the region has long been a weekend destination for Baltimore and D.C. natives. It’s farm country abutting the water – a landscape as romantic as you can imagine it to be.
The Shore Life Magazine
What do LA, Boston, NYC, DC, Baltimore and finally St. Michaels all have in common?
All of them are places that Julie Moriarty has called home. A graduate of the Gemological Institute of America and a widely-recognized expert in antique and estate jewelry, Julie and her husband, Robert Hockaday, a Baltimore area commercial real estate developer, decided to finally make Talbot County their primary residence.
Julie began her career specializing in both vintage textiles and jewelry. She was especially interested in the fine work and detail of some of the major jewelry houses of the twentieth century, including Tiffany, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpel. It was her appreciation of this fine workmanship that compelled her to pursue a career in antique and estate jewelry. After graduating from the Gemological Institute of America, Julie began to concentrate exclusively in vintage fine jewelry. She developed a reputation as a wholesaler of fine antique and estate jewelry supplying some of the most prestigious retail establishments in the country and abroad with inventory.
“I spent a great deal of time traveling, seeking out great examples of antique and estate jewelry and would work with estate attorneys, bankers, museums, other dealers and the like who had been commissioned to sell collections and family estates. Frequently, I would assist and advise family members as to what was valuable and what they should keep or dispose of.”
“My husband and I chose Talbot County, and specifically St. Michaels, because of its captivating natural beauty and distinctive cultural and historical character. We decided to try something different and establish a retail store in St. Michaels. At Guilford & Company, we specialize in antique and estate jewelry, with a focus on beautiful and classic pieces from the 1850’s to the present day.”
